“The original particle engine was ported from a Flex/AS3 project to javascript. We’re using processing.js for particle rendering on canvas which is a very useful graphics library created by John Resig. The music will only be played if the browser supports the audio tag. To detect if the audio or canvas feature is present we use the awesome modernizr library. We could have used a fallback solution like playing the sound via Flash. But this experiment is about HTML5 – and who needs Flash anyway? “.

Universe is a system that supports the exploration of personal mythology, allowing each of us to find our own constellations, based on our own interests and curiosities. Everyone’s path through Universe is different, just as everyone’s path through life is different. Using the metaphor of an interactive night sky, Universe presents an immersive environment for navigating the world’s contemporary mythology, as found online in global news and information from Daylife.

Universe was conceived and created by Jonathan Harris, in conjunction with Daylife, whose amazing database of real time global news information powers the project.

Universe is divided into nine “Stages”, each of which offers a different window into the data. Transitions between the stages are fast and fluid, and controlled through a menu of clickable constellations running along the bottom edge of the screen.

Universe is a Java applet, created using Processing, the open source software initiative by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. The global news data that powers Universe comes entirely from Daylife, a company dedicated to creating interesting ways to explore and experience the world of news. If you are an artist or developer interested in using the Daylife API for a project of your own, please contact partners@daylife.com.

Join host Andrew Marr as he discovers how each and every one of us is interconnecting making Britain what it is today.

Britain looks very different from the skies. From a bird’s eye view of the nation, its workings, cities, landscapes and peoples are revealed and re-discovered in new and extraordinary ways.

Cutting edge technology allows you to see through cloud cover, navigate the landscape and witness familiar sights as never seen before.

On a typical day, over 400 ships pass through the straits off Dover. This visualisation shows 24 hours worth of shipping recorded as it passes through the Channel.

Your greeted with the cryptic message, “The surface of the earth holds a message for you. You just need to look a little closer.” Very Matrix like, but true with this very clever visualization. As the Jesse Vig the developer stated, “While working on a different Google Maps project, I noticed that a number of buildings looked like letters of the alphabet when viewed from above. This is the point where I should have just said ‘hmmm, good observation’ and gone on with my life. But I didn’t and that’s why this website is here.”

This reminds me of the flickr groups that take photos of things that look like letters in order to construct words. However, this is a wonderful interactive version of that idea. I found the site well done and easy to use the first time. Great job Jesse!
